How to connect a Samsung subwoofer to a soundbar: plug both into power, turn the soundbar on, and wait for the blue LINK light on the back of the subwoofer to stop blinking and stay solid.

That’s the whole job on most sets, because the two link on their own.

When the light keeps blinking, the bar plays thin and every explosion lands like a door closing.

The fix is a manual pairing Samsung calls ID SET, which takes about a minute with a paper clip and the remote.

Below are both methods, what each light on the subwoofer means, and what to check when the pairing won’t hold.

How Does a Samsung Subwoofer Connect Automatically?

That automatic link is the first thing to try, and it needs no buttons at all. A Samsung subwoofer connects to its soundbar by itself once both have power and the bar is switched on (Samsung US):

  1. Connect the power cords to the back of the soundbar and the subwoofer.
  2. Plug both into a wall outlet.
  3. Turn the soundbar on.
  4. Watch the blue LINK light on the subwoofer. It blinks while the two connect, then glows solid.

If the blue light never stops blinking, the automatic link has failed. Samsung Canada says most connection problems clear if you unplug only the subwoofer for 5 seconds, leave the soundbar plugged in and on, then plug the subwoofer back in (Samsung Canada).

How to Connect a Samsung Subwoofer to a Soundbar With ID SET

When that 5-second restart doesn’t work, pair the two by hand, which you’ll also need after a factory reset or after either unit has been serviced or replaced. These are Samsung’s manual steps:

  1. Plug in both units, with the soundbar turned off.
  2. Press and hold the ID SET button on the back of the subwoofer with a paper clip or pen tip.
  3. Keep holding until the red STANDBY light goes out and the blue LINK light blinks quickly.
  4. On the soundbar remote, press and hold Mute while the bar is still off.
  5. Keep holding until ID SET appears on the soundbar’s display.
  6. Turn the soundbar on while the subwoofer’s blue light is still blinking.
  7. Check that the blue light is now solid. If it’s still blinking, turn the bar off and start again from step 2.

The remote button in step 4 varies by model. Samsung’s own note says to try holding Up if Mute does nothing, and the HW-B550 manual lists Up, held for 5 seconds, as its ID SET button (Samsung HW-B550 support).

Older bars use a SAT MUTE button held for 5 seconds instead (Samsung Singapore). If none of these work, your soundbar’s manual names the right button.

Can You Pair a Samsung Subwoofer Without the Remote?

Sometimes, and it depends on the bar. Some Samsung soundbars have their own ID SET button that replaces steps 4 and 5, and on the others Samsung says the remote is required.

So check the back and underside of your bar for a small ID SET button before you buy anything. On a bar without one, a lost remote means buying a replacement remote for that model.

What Do the Lights on a Samsung Subwoofer Mean?

Those blinking and solid lights in the steps above are the subwoofer’s only way of telling you what’s wrong. Samsung lists four states for the LEDs on the back (Samsung Singapore):

A red light isn’t always a problem. When you turn the soundbar off, the subwoofer blinks blue a few times and then turns red as it goes into standby.

Why Won’t a Samsung Subwoofer Stay Connected?

If the light goes back to blinking blue after a successful pairing, the wireless signal is usually the cause. Samsung’s HW-B550 manual gives a maximum range of about 10 meters (33 feet), and says a metal or steel-reinforced concrete wall between the bar and subwoofer can stop the link completely.

The same manual warns that devices using the same 5.8GHz band can cause sound interruptions. So move the subwoofer closer, keep it in the same room, and give it clear space away from Wi-Fi routers and microwaves.

Two more causes are worth ruling out. Samsung sets each subwoofer to connect only with the soundbar it came with, so a subwoofer from a different set needs the full ID SET pairing, if your bar accepts it at all.

How Do You Turn Up the Subwoofer on a Samsung Soundbar?

Once the link is solid, the bass level is the next thing people want to change. On the HW-B550, you push the WOOFER button on the remote up or down to set the level to -12, or anywhere from -6 to +6, and press it in to go back to 0.
