Your new TV sounds thin, so the question comes fast: how much are sound bars, and do you need an expensive one?
The shelf doesn’t make it easy, with a $139.99 Samsung sitting a few feet from bars that list for $1,999.99.
Spend too little and the voices still get lost; spend too much and you pay for rear speakers a small room can’t use.
Prices follow a pattern, though, and each step up buys something you can name: a subwoofer, a center channel, Dolby Atmos height or rear speakers.
Below are the prices Sonos, Bose, Samsung, Vizio and Roku charged on their own US stores on 29 September 2026, what each tier adds, and the extra costs to budget for.
How Much Are Sound Bars in 2026?
That $139.99-to-$1,999.99 spread is real, but most bars cluster in the middle. On the makers’ own US stores, the cheapest bar we found was Roku’s Streambar SE, on sale for $99.99 against a list price of $149.99, and the priciest were Samsung’s HW-Q990F and HW-Q990H, both listed at $1,999.99 (Roku, Samsung).
Consumer Reports, which tests soundbars, draws the line in a similar place. Full-featured, great-sounding models can easily cost $600 or more, it says, while its bargain picks are generally priced below $300 (Consumer Reports).
Here’s how the makers’ current lineups fall into tiers, at the prices on their own US stores (sale prices change often, so treat them as a snapshot):

What Makes One Soundbar Cost More Than Another?
Those tiers follow the hardware inside, and the channel numbers on the box are the quickest way to read it. Consumer Reports explains the code: a 2.1-channel bar has two front channels and a separate subwoofer, a 3.1-channel bar adds a center channel, and a 5.1-channel system usually adds rear speakers.
A third number means height. Consumer Reports’ example is a 3.1.2-channel bar, with three front channels, a subwoofer and two up-firing channels for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.
Every extra channel means more speakers and amplification in the box, so prices climb with the numbers. Samsung’s lineup shows it clearly: the 2.0-channel HW-B400F is $139.99, the 2.1-channel HW-B550F $229.99, the 3.1.2-channel HW-Q600F $699.99 and the 11.1.4-channel HW-Q990F $1,999.99 at list price.
Features add to the bill too. Consumer Reports says most soundbars now include Bluetooth, while some advanced models stream music and video services directly and take voice commands from Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant.
The spread inside one brand can be as wide as the spread between brands. Samsung alone runs from $139.99 to $1,999.99 at list price, and Sonos from $219 to $1,099.

The bottom tier is where most people should start, because it fixes the thin sound that sent you shopping in the first place. Consumer Reports says an inexpensive 2.1-channel soundbar, with two front channels and a separate subwoofer, will do nicely if you simply want better TV sound.
Samsung’s two cheapest bars show the split inside this tier. The HW-B400F ($139.99) is a 2.0-channel bar with a subwoofer built into the bar itself, while the HW-B550F ($229.99) adds a separate subwoofer box for deeper bass.
The Samsung HW-B550F is the one we’d point to for a first soundbar with real bass. It’s a 2.1-channel bar with DTS Virtual:X processing and its own subwoofer.

Sonos and Bose sell compact bars at the top of this tier, without a subwoofer. Sonos describes its Ray ($219) as a compact soundbar for smaller rooms and TVs, and the Bose TV Speaker ($279) connects by Bluetooth and HDMI ARC (Sonos, Bose).
Vizio’s V-Series, which it bills as big sound at a small price, lists at $249 (Vizio). Roku’s Streambar SE is a different kind of bargain: a 4K streaming player and soundbar in one, expandable to 2.1 with a subwoofer later.
What you usually give up at this price is the center channel and the height effect. The 2.0-channel HW-B400F and 2.1-channel HW-B550F have no center speaker for dialogue, and Sonos’s Ray doesn’t support Dolby Atmos.
Can You Get a Decent Soundbar for About $100?
That bottom tier reaches lower than $140 when there’s a sale. Consumer Reports says its bargain picks are generally priced below $300, and far below it in some cases.
On the makers’ own stores, the closest to $100 was Roku’s Streambar SE at $99.99, a limited-time price against a list price of $149.99. Roku sells it as a 4K HDR streaming player with surprisingly big sound, a remote with TV controls and room to expand to 2.1.
Samsung’s cheapest bar, the 2.0-channel HW-B400F at $139.99, builds its subwoofer into the bar instead of adding a box. A separate subwoofer box starts one step up, with the $229.99 HW-B550F.
What Does a $300 to $700 Soundbar Add?
That step up usually buys clearer voices and smarter features rather than just more volume. Consumer Reports says a 3.1-channel system adds a center-channel speaker, which can help make dialogue clearer.
This is also the tier where Wi-Fi, voice assistants and Dolby Atmos arrive. Sonos calls its Beam Gen 2 ($499) a powerful compact soundbar for TVs up to 65 inches, and it supports Dolby Atmos, while the newer Beam Ultra ($699) targets the same size of TV.
The Sonos Beam Gen 2 is the midrange pick for most living rooms. It fits under TVs up to 65 inches, and Sonos sells a subwoofer and rear speakers to add later, so you’re not locked in.

Other makers split this tier differently. Bose’s Smart Soundbar ($549) is a single bar with Dolby Atmos and a dialogue mode, and Vizio bills its M-Series ($499) as a step up to surround sound.
Samsung’s HW-Q600F ($699.99) takes the bar-plus-subwoofer route instead. It’s a 3.1.2-channel set with a separate subwoofer, and the “.2” means two up-firing channels for Atmos height.
Why Do Some Soundbars Cost $1,000 or More?
The jump from $700 to $1,000 pays for more speakers and more power in one bar, aimed at bigger rooms. Sonos calls the Arc Ultra ($1,099) an ultra-immersive soundbar for large rooms and TVs.
Consumer Reports says its premium picks deliver very good overall sound, and several add up-firing drivers to enhance the sense of overhead sound. Some come with rear speakers, or let you add them for a full surround Atmos setup.
The Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar is the premium bar we’d pick if you want one box. It’s an all-in-one Dolby Atmos bar with a dialogue mode that Bose says uses AI, at $999 on Bose’s store.

Past $1,300, you’re buying a whole system rather than a bar. Samsung sells the HW-Q990F as an 11.1.4-channel set with a subwoofer and rear speakers in the box, at a list price of $1,999.99.
Bose’s new Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar sits at $1,099. That’s the same price as the Arc Ultra, so at the top end you’re choosing between brands and systems more than price points.
How Much More Does Dolby Atmos Cost?
That height effect is the most common upgrade in the middle of the range, and on the makers’ own stores it starts at about $500. Sonos’s cheapest Atmos bar is the Beam Gen 2 at $499, Bose’s is the Smart Soundbar at $549, and Samsung’s 3.1.2-channel HW-QS700F was $599.99 on sale, down from $799.99.
Whether it’s worth paying for depends on what you watch. Consumer Reports says Atmos and DTS:X give movies with specially encoded soundtracks a more dramatic, lifelike effect, so it adds little to shows and games without that mix.

There’s a placement cost too. Bose says bars with up-firing speakers, like its Smart Ultra Soundbar, won’t work as intended if they’re recessed, so an Atmos bar may need an open spot instead of a cabinet shelf.
How Much Do a Subwoofer and Rear Speakers Add?
That surround setup is where a soundbar budget grows fastest, because each add-on is priced like a small speaker of its own. Sonos’s bundles make the math easy to see.
A Beam Gen 2 with a Sub Mini costs $948 as a set, against $998 bought separately, so the Sub Mini alone adds $499. Two Era 100 speakers for surround add $438 to a Beam Ultra, bought separately.
At the top of the range, the Arc Ultra with a Sub 4 is $1,898 as a set, against $1,998 separately, so the Sub 4 adds $899. A full Arc Ultra setup with two Era 300 rear speakers is $2,002 as a set.
Buying the bar first and the add-ons later costs a little more, since the bundle discount goes away, but it lets you hear the bar alone before spending the rest. On those Sonos numbers, waiting costs $50 on a Sub Mini and $100 on a Sub 4.

Other Costs to Budget For: Mounts, Cables and Returns
Beyond the speakers, the main extra is how you mount it. Sonos sells its bars with a matching wall mount as a set, and the difference works out to $39 for the Ray, $49 for the Beam Gen 2 and $79 for the Arc Ultra.
Most soundbars connect to the TV by HDMI ARC or optical, so check which cable comes in the box before you buy one.
Returns are the cost people forget. Consumer Reports suggests making sure you can return or exchange a soundbar, because it may sound very different in your home than it did in the store.
How Long Should a Soundbar Last for the Price?
A bar you keep for years costs less per year than a cheaper one you replace, but makers don’t promise a lifespan. Warranties are short: Vizio’s covers its soundbars for one year from the original purchase for home use (Vizio).

They do, and big markdowns are common. On 29 September 2026, Samsung’s US store showed discounts of $100 to $400 on several bars: the HW-Q990F was down to $1,599.99 from $1,999.99, and the HW-Q800H to $799.99 from $1,099.99.
Roku had its Streambar SE at $99.99, a limited-time $50 cut, and Sonos’s bundles saved $50 to $100 against buying the pieces separately. So a list price is the ceiling, not the price you’ll necessarily pay.
Warehouse stores carry fewer models, mostly in the middle of the range. Costco’s soundbar page listed 10 bars for delivery that day: one priced between $100 and $200, six between $200 and $500, one between $500 and $1,000, and two between $1,000 and $2,000 (Costco).
How Much Should You Spend on a Soundbar?

Bose puts rough numbers on the room part (Bose). Small bedrooms and offices of 200 square feet or less suit a compact bar, the average US living room of about 340 square feet suits a midsize bar, and rooms of 500 square feet or more need a powerful bar, ideally with extra speakers.
